Cristian Mungiu's “Four Months, Three Weeks & Two Days,” awarded last year with the Palme D'Or in Cannes, was also the winner of the second Gopo Awards Gala in Bucharest. The event was organised by Romanian Film Promotion, in a move to celebrate, “at home” as well, the recent international achievements of the Romanian film-making industry. The Gopo Awards are a tribute to cartoonist Ion Popescu-Gopo (1923-1989). His works include the “Gopo Man” which won the author international fame and awards, including the 1957 Palme D'Or for short films in Cannes. Cristian Mungiu's movie won ten out of the 23 Gopo statuettes handed out Monday night. The awards for the best director, best photography, best actress (Anamaria Marinca), best supporting actor (Vlad Ivanov) were but a few.
Director Cristian Mungiu:
“We started working on this movie in November, hoping to be ready in time for Cannes. We already knew this was the best place for the international opening. We also knew that many Romanian films had been screened in Cannes in recent years, but we wanted to get into the official competition. We had also heard that in 2007 films by famous directors such as the Coen brothers, Emir Kusturita, Wong Kar Wai and other world cinema maestros would be selected in the festival. So we were pretty sure we wouldn't stand a chance, since this was an anniversary edition, the 60th, dedicated to regular festival guests. I don't know whether last year's events will change my life as a whole, but they will certainly mark my professional career. Therefore my thanks and gratitude, for this perfect openness to considering some absolutely unknown names, go to Thierry Fremeaux, the official delegate of the festival.”

Other major awards in the Gopo Gala – including the one for screenplay and best actor (Razvan Vasilescu) – went to “California Dreamin' (Endless)” by the late Cristian Nemescu. Winner of the section “Un certain regard” in Cannes, the film cast included the famous Armand Assante. Special guests in the second Gopo Awards Gala were Thierry Fremeaux, the official delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, and the Romanian-born French director Radu Mihaileanu.
