POLITICAL COME-BACK 25/02/2008 |
(2008-02-25) |
Last updated: 2008-02-26 15:11 EET |
What many observers had regarded as impossible eventually happened: the former Social Democratic premier Adrian Nastase made a forceful come-back in the political arena, as two-thirds of the voters entrusted him with the presidency of the leading Romanian opposition party's National Council. Riding the crest of a self-confidence wave, Nastase says he is prepared to aim even higher, and is confident that he may stand chances to defeat incumbent Head of State Traian Basescu in the forthcoming presidential race.
A controversial character, Adrian Nastase returns to a leading party position after three years in which, keeping a low profile, he has tried to wash his image clean of bribe-taking and bribe-giving suspicions. Prosecuted by the National Anti-corruption Directorate, Adrian Nastase was accused by anti-corruption prosecutors of misdeeds having taken place shortly after he was appointed premier in the previous electoral cycle. Specifically, Nastase is accused of having appointed as head of the national bureau dealing with money laundering an individual who kept under wraps a file in which Nastase's wife was being investigated for having received 400,000 USD without the required legal justification.
Nastase claimed at the time that the money was proceeds from the sale of paintings and jewels that belonged to his wife's aunt, and accused the DNA of operating as “political police.” A regular party member for a period that would have brought other politicians' careers to an end, Adrian Nastase now joins the Executive Bureau of the party, owing to a large extent to the support of party founder Ion Iliescu.
The reaction of current party leader Mircea Geoana, who backed Nastase's challenger, once again proves that in spite of problems, the PSD remains the most united party:
“There are still those image issues, but I am confident that Adrian Nastase will manage to settle them. Especially since, as far as the nature of accusations made against him are concerned, there is no doubt that these files are subject to political manipulation.”
Overcoming rivalries and closing ranks when necessary, in this case for the ensuing electoral campaign, is also the message conveyed by Adrian Nastase's inauguration address:
“I seek no retaliation, and I seek no delays in the modernisation of the party. I don't want to hide from the DNA; what I want, what I would like very much, is for us to win the elections together.”
