“THE EXCHANGE OF CRIMINALS” 22/02/2008 |

“Italy is hurt by the Romanian presence when it comes to wrong-doing, but I reject anti-Romanian attitudes”. This statement was made on Thursday in Bucharest by Italy’s state police head, Antonio Manganelli, 4 months after the anger generated in Italy following the killing of an Italian woman at the end of October, blamed on a Romanian national of Rroma origin. The number one priority of the Romanian foreign ministry, the Bucharest-Rome relationship, which was under a lot of pressure at the end of last year, has entered a more relaxed stage. Antonio Manganelli’s trip to Bucharest can thus be seen as an opportunity to present the results of the collaboration between Romanian and Italian law enforcement institutions.
The good news is that the number of crimes committed by Romanians in Italy dropped by 20%. The bad news is that they still commit the largest number of crimes in Italy. Beyond percentages and ratings, the crimes perpetrated by Romanians are part of a broader picture, said Manganelli. He explained that foreigners are responsible for 35% of the crimes committed in his country. Gheorghe Popa, the head of the Romanian Police, said his institution has been carrying out activities in Italy in 2006. As far as the efficiency of these actions, Gheorghe Popa said:
“The result of the activities we have carried out jointly are positive and they have a good impact on the appropriate management of crimes committed by Romanian citizens in Italy and especially crime that happens In the streets.”
Unfortunately, an increasing number of mob-like interest groups from Italy have been found in Romania. Their interest is focused mostly on the real estate area, but these are regarded by the authorities as “isolates cases”. We can only hope that what we might call “the exchange of criminals” between the two countries isn’t taken any further.
