Two opposition parties, the right-wing National Liberal Party and the centrist Conservative Party, have this week founded the Centre-Right Alliance in Romania. After the alliance protocol was signed, the leaders of the two parties, Liberal Crin Antonescu and Conservative Daniel Constantin, said a first step had been made towards the repositioning of the Opposition in the political arena, in view of the parliamentary elections in 2012 and 2016. The two parties will have their own candidates in the local elections, and common runners in the parliamentary ones.

The document also lays down the programme of the new alliance, which includes fiscal relaxation and social stabilisation measures. The Social Democrats, which make up the largest opposition party in Romania, announced that by March 1 a Social Democratic – Liberal – Conservative alliance may be established, laying the foundations of a long-standing alternative to the current power, comprising the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania and the Union for the Progress of Romania.

The IMF made its seventh payment, worth over 900 million euros, under the loan agreement signed with Romania. The total financial support package agreed on in 2009 with major international financial institutions – the IMF, World Bank, and EU – amounts to 20 billion Euros.

On January 25th, an IMF mission will come to Bucharest for a new assessment of the economic indices, and to discuss a new precautionary loan with Romanian authorities, which could be accessed only if necessary. Moreover, Romania will carry on its partnership with the World Bank in applying reforms in public administration, health care, education, agriculture and social assistance.

A substantial increase in fuel prices has triggered a string of protests among transport companies and individual drivers. Some of them attempted to block petrol station operations, by paying in small change and taking more time than necessary to refuel. Although many of the causes of price rises are well known – the increase in excises, in VAT, crude prices and exchange rates – everyone agrees that fuel prices are overblown.

The National Bank governor himself said he did not understand the mechanisms that lead to the price rises announced by producers. The protests by carriers and drivers, as well as the signals from the central bank, have not gone unnoticed. Prime minister Emil Boc ordered an inquiry into the situation, while tax authorities initiated audits in the leading oil companies on the Romanian market.

The Hungarian foreign minister, Janost Martonyi, reiterated that the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area remains a priority of the current EU presidency, held by Hungary. The official emphasised that he would do his best to reconcile this view with the position of France and Germany, who would like to postpone the accession, initially scheduled for March 31.

Martonyi admitted that the solution is complicated, because while Romania meets the accession criteria, according to the European Union, Bulgaria still has certain problems. Still, accession remains a priority for the Hungarian presidency of the EU, because it is a promise made by Budapest to its Bulgarian and Romanian friends, Martonyi said.

The Government of Romania approved the ratification of the Treaty on the State Border between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The document regulates, among other things, aspects related to the construction of common assets on the Romanian-Moldovan border, the maintenance of border areas and the use of roads and railways that cross the border.

Negotiations between Romania and the neighbouring Republic of Moldova, launched in 2003, resulted in the signature of the Treaty, in Bucharest, on November 8th, 2010. The draft will be submitted for endorsement by Parliament, through an emergency procedure.

The Romanian Cristina Neagu was voted the best handball player of the world in 2010, following a poll conducted by the International Handball Federation among experts, journalists and fans. At only 22 years of age, the Romanian player has some exceptional performances on record.

Since her début in 2005 in the national youth team, she was repeatedly voted best young player. Since 2007, when she joined the national team, she has played over 80 international games, scoring over 300 goals. She was voted the best rookie of the year 2009, won the bronze medal in the European championship and was chosen in that tournament's dream team. With her club team, Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea, she played in the Champions League finals.
