SIGNS OF CHANGE IN THE ROMANIAN GOVERNMENT 12/02/2008

Defense Minister Teodor Melescanu is to take over the Justice portfolio he is now holding ad interim. His position as Defense Minister is to be taken by former General Secretary of the Government and president of the Parliamentary Control Commission for the Romanian Intelligence Service, Radu Stroe. The two nominations will be submitted to the Presidency for approval, after the Constitutional Court’s motivation in the case of Norica Nicolai has been published in the Official Gazette. We recall that the Liberals’ initial nominee for the Justice Portfolio, liberal Norica Nicolai was turned down by the head of state, on the grounds that former Ceausescu-age prosecutor had failed to meet moral and professional criteria. The law stipulates the president can reject the nomination of a minister only once. Nominated as Justice Minister, Teodor Melescanu said.

"I believe this is a decision we ought to assume, specifically to get over the stalemate at the Justice Ministry. As for the Defense Ministry, my successor will have to assume the continuation of preparations initiated for the NATO summit to be held in April this year and I truly believe he will definitely be able to achieve that.”

The response from Romanian politicians to the two nominations was quick to appear. Here is Marko Bela, leader of the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania.

"I don’t think at this point parliamentary elections will help us solve the problem. We will also have consultations with the members of the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians, but let me tell you that at the moment The Social Democrats call the roost.”

The Social Democratic Party, the main party in opposition announced it would reject in Parliament any other new governing formula, calling for the government’s resignation of honour and for snap parliamentary elections. Here is the Social Democrats’ leader Mircea Geoana.

"One of the options at hand is the snap election option. Halting Romania for one more year in the rampant chaos is a blatant loss for all Romanians, as well as for all parties.”

The Conservative Party, a former ally of the National Liberal party in the ruling coalition has not taken any decision yet. Should the incumbent government fail to get any political support, the snap election solution is the only one that holds.
