“Clinch at the doors of the Justice Ministry”-this is a conclusion drawn by most newspapers issued in Bucharest on Monday. Although a new week has started, there is still vacation at the helm of the Justice Ministry. Although they met on Saturday, neither President Traian Basescu nor Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu spread a word on the result of the talks.

The President and the Prime Minister met, at the third invitation launched by the head of state, to discuss the case of Liberal senator Norica Nicolai-Monday’s issue of the daily “Romania Libera” writes. It was a 30 minute perfunctory meeting, only to save appearances, with the prime minister sticking to the same idea: Nicolai should be Justice Minister.

Newspaper editorialists believe the prime minister will go ahead with his proposal to the bitter end: the Constitutional Court. And this after Basescu called on him to give up the idea of nominating Nicolai and to appoint a non-controversial, politically independent person. Basescu also said the professional file of the candidate was not compatible with the position she had been nominated for.”

A judicial error and the export of a child”-these are two episodes from Norica Nicolai’s past, and at the same time two reasons for which the president refuses to accept her as Justice minister-the daily “Cotidianul” writes. The newspaper also says that Nicolai characterized the episodes as glaring lies, but her personal file contradicts her.

President Traian Basescu has quoted excerpts from the personal file of former prosecutor Norica Nicolai, showing the senator allegedly committed a judicial error in 1987 and infringed the magistrate’s Statute in 1991, when she represented an American citizen in court in an adoption case. In the first case, Norica Nicolai ( former Clinci) received a warning, and after the adoption case, she gave up her career in magistracy. Norica’s victim was a mentally challenged person-the daily “Evenimentul Zilei” writes-adding the man wrongfully spent 18 days in prison.

“Gardianul” asked however “Who infringed the law: Nicolai in 1987 or Basescu in 2008?” Representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office with the High Court of Cassation and Justice say both Prosecutor General , Laura Codruta Kovesi and President Traian Basescu abided by the laws in force when they took Norica Nicolai’s file out of archives.

“Jurnalul National” asks “ Traian, where is Macovei’s file?” , adding that although former justice minister Monica Macovei was a prosecutor in communist Romania, she wasn’t treated like Norica Nicolai when she was appointed justice minister, being a chum of president Basescu.
