ROMANIAN PRESIDENT TRAIAN BASESCU'S NEW YEAR ADDRESS
(2008-01-01)
Last updated: 2008-01-01 16:32 EET
In his New Year address, Romanian President Traian Basescu reminded that one year has passed since Romania joined the European Union in January 2007 and he also presented the priorities for 2008: a better education system, a health care system that should meet the population’s needs, the modernization of roads and a cleaner environment. But, the president underscored, a strategic objective would be that Romanians should have better living standards in their own country.

Traian Basescu expressed his conviction that in three or four years from now, Romania will undergo deep changes due to its EU membership. For these goals to be achieved President Basescu believes that Romania needs a political class devoted to the Romanian people and that Romanians should capitalize on the chances created by the state and stick together.

The Romanian head of state thanked the Romanian military on missions in various theaters of operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Bosnia, Herzegovina and Africa. He also mentioned the millions of Romanians working abroad and approached the issue of Romanians living in Romania’s neighboring countries who, out of historical reasons, are now living in different states such as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
In the end of his address President Basescu wished all Romanians, both at home and abroad, “A Happy New Year!”
