THE PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR 2007 ON RRI
(2008-01-01)
Last updated: 2008-01-01 16:05 EET
Among the most often nominated personalities were: Nobel peace prize winner, former US vice-president Al Gore, German chancellor Angela Merkel, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas.

Some of you nominated the Buddhist monks who protested peacefully against the junta in Myanmar (Burma), former Russian dissident Vladimir Bukovski, Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushcenko, the Bulgarian nurses detained in Libya for several years, as well as Romanian President Traian Basescu and the former coach of the Romanian Women gymnastics team, Octavian Belu.

Two special nominations referred to the Romanian-Italian relations, that have been shadowed by an exacerbation of anti-Romanian feelings in the Peninsula, over the past few months, against the backdrop of crimes committed by few of the many Romanian citizens working in Italy. One of the nominations was that of Raluca Tigau’s mother. After her young daughter died in a car accident, Mrs. Tigau decided to donate Raluca’s organs in Italy.

And here is another special nomination: quote “The personality of the year should be any Italian or Romanian citizen who went through those moments of crisis that impacted the relations between the two countries, without forgetting that evil does not define a whole nation, but only some individuals.” wrote Stefano Valianti of Bologna in Italy.
Just like in previous years, politicians received most nominations from you. But the personality of the year on RRI, following our traditional poll among listeners and internet users comes from another fields of activity: arts.

And the title goes to…a Romanian whose name was on the lips of millions of people around the world in 2007: director Cristian Mungiu, who made a touching, dramatic and realist film on abortions in the last years of Ceausescu’s communist dictatorship. His film “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days” won many international prizes, among which the much-coveted “Palme d’Or” in Cannes. Mungiu’s film was also designated Best European Film of 2007 and was nominated for the Golden Globes, with critics saying it stands high chances to win an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
