New Leadership of Romanian Police 24/11/ 2010 |

“Why do you call them crime lords? Because they are loan sharks?” The chief of a county police station candidly asked these questions, in a bid to defend the memory of a recently assassinated local crime lord. He thus fuelled a new scandal within the Romanian Interior Ministry, which dies out, at least apparently, after minister Traian Igas dismissed secretary of state Dan Fătuloiu and head of the Police, Petre Tobă, for having marred the image of the institution.
The former talked publicly about ordered assassinations and the links of criminal networks with law enforcement authorities without explaining, however, what he did himself, in his capacity as a secretary of state, to prevent the infiltration of mafia-styled structures inside the police authority.
Moreover, posing as an incorruptible person, former secretary of state. Dan Fatuloiu denounced the attempt of a certain businessman to bribe his way out of numerous criminal files and resorted to him. Police chief Petre Tobă was allegedly dismissed because he tolerated at the helm of the local police people like the one who deplored the killing of a local crime lord.
Another reason, the press speculated, was that, under his authority, several police officers, who were trade unionists, participated in a rally and chanted inappropriate anti-presidential slogans. Last but not least the changes at the top of the Interior Ministry have allegedly been made against the backdrop of the struggle for power within the Liberal Democratic Party, the main party in the governing coalition.
“Fătuloiu- a collateral victim” writes the daily EVENIMENTUL ZILEI, adding that “Fatuloiu felt threatened by the reform planned by minister Igas and asked him to give him the green light for taking the measures needed.” “He was free to act as he pleased but he did not know how to play that card,” the newspaper adds.
The daily ROMANIA LIBERA writes that the reform of the police got off on the wrong foot. While the new secretary of state Ioan Dascalu is a good choice, given that he proved a good police chief, big questions hover around Liviu Popa, the new General Police Inspectorate chief. He was the head of a body- the General Anti-Corruption Directorate, which failed to expose the very links between crime lords and the police authority.
