Currently run by the fifth minister in the past two years, the Interior and administration Ministry in Romania is again making headlines. Under the heading ‘The crime that triggered the scandal’, the daily paper ROMANIA LIBERA says that it all started when an alleged settling of criminal accounts ended in the death of a crime lord.
What came next surprised everybody: accused of failing to control things in his own jurisdiction, the chief of the Neamt Police Inspectorate, Aurelian Soric, said that the members of the Mararu gang, involved in the scandals reported in Piatra Neamt, north eastern Romania, were not crime lords, and the loan-sharking they are dealing in was actually …charity work.’
According to ROMANIA LIBERA, what could explain this attitude are the tight links between Soric and the aforementioned gang, proven by written documents that the paper claims to have got hold of. More specifically, Romania Libera says, quote ‘citizens would report to him, and chief Soric would report to Mararu’ unquote.
Coming into the spotlight when a request was filed to sack the chief of the Neamt Police Inspectorate, State Secretary Dan Fatuloiu soon turned into the main character in an attempted bribe giving case. His denouncement led to a sting operation as a result of which a business man, willing to give the state secretary one million Euro worth of goods in return for the solving of dozens of criminal files, was eventually taken into custody, alongside three of his collaborators.
The money would have reached Fatuloiu, including via some of his son’s companies. ‘The war at the top of domestic affairs has reached its peak’- headlines the daily paper EVENIMENTUL ZILEI, saying that quote ‘minister Traian Igas took a stand on Monday, for the first time, in the scandal involving the institution he is running’. End of quote. What took him out was a statement made by Fatulou himself, quote: “ I was betrayed by officers with the Economic Department, whom I had asked to draw up a map of all crime clans in the country” unquote.
The minister recommended to Fatuloiu to refrain from saying anything before the report is complete. The ‘bribing’ affair seems to be indicative of the dissolution of an institution whose role in ensuring citizens’ safety is crucial’ writes the daily paper Jurnalul National. According to the paper, quote ‘the fact that a wealthy racketeer, known for his acquisitions on the capital market, gets into contact with one of the heads of the Interior Ministry to hush up matters in certain investigations is indicative of the fact that bribe is the key element regulating the market economy in Romania” unquote.
JURNALUL NATIONAL suspects that the link between the murder in Piatra Neamt and the scandal at the top of the Interior Ministry is by no means artificial. “ It’s safe to say that this was specifically instrumented to justify president Basescu’s revenge on the Police, the one that came up with the most humiliating slogan against the presidency” JURNALUL NATIONAL concludes.
