Academician Constantin Balaceanu Stolnici is now the central figure in the latest big scandal involving informers of the Securitate, who have been identified by the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives.
A physician by profession, holding in the 1980s a top position in the managing board of the Geriatrics Institute founded by Ana Aslan, the Liberal senior started collaborating with the Securitate in 1965. He is now accused by the media as an accessory to the 1988 assasination of Vlad Georgescu, the Director of Radio Free Europe, who died of fast-spreading cancer, most likely caused by irradiation.
Under the heading, “Stolnici, a spy on Free Europe: the evidence”, the daily COTIDIANUL gives wide coverage to the issue, even carrying a note in which the “source” called “Laurentiu”, exposed by the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives as being Constantin Balaceanu Stolnici, provided the Romanian special services with the plan of Vlad Georgescu’ house in Munich.
The daily COTIDIANUL also says that the document coming from the archives of the Romanian Intelligence Service, dates back to October 1984 and proves that Balaceanu-Stolnici lied a week before. In an interview with the daily COTIDIANUL the academician admitted having used the code name “Laurentiu”, but he denied he had paid any home visit to Vlad Georgescu or that he had been asked by the Securitate to draw up a plan of somebody’s house.
Additionally, the daily COTIDIANUL brings as new arguments the statement made by Vlad Georgescu’s wife, who still lives in Munich. She says, quote: ”I have no doubt. I don’t remember exactly his face, but my husband was very often speaking about him and I remember that visit, when Mr. Balaceanu Stolnici accompanied by his wife and somebody else was expected to come to our house.” Unquote.
The daily GARDIANUL writes that quote” it would really be a triumph of truth, if the veil were lifted and the operations carried out by the Romanian secret services against “Radio Free Europe” were exposed, if it is proven, without any shadow of doubt that Stolnici was involved in the operations masterminded by the Securitate against Vlad Gergescu. Most key figures in the Securitate who were involved in the war on the Munich-based radio station are alive. But they will never tell journalists about the “Free Europe” case.” End of quote.
The daily GARDIANUL wonders rhetorically, quote “Is today’s Romania ready to assume responsibility for the terrorist actions of the communist regime? Are the authorities of a EU member state ready to admit that Ceausescu was not the only one guilty of the Securitate’s operations against Radio Free Europe?” unquote.
