A NEW PARTY IN ROMANIA (4.12.2007)

On Monday morning, Emil Boc, the president of the opposition Democratic Party, said that it was unlikely for the Democrats to strike a pre-electoral alliance with the Liberal dissidents making up the Liberal-Democratic Party led by Theodor Stolojan. Boc added that the two parties would, however, look into several options, including the setting up of a strong people’s party. Days before, Stolojan had firmly stated that his party was the mouthpiece of right-wing Liberalism, that it could not melt into another party and that he ruled out a merger.

Considering these statements, as well as information regarding rifts between the two parties, it was clear for everybody that the prospect of an alliance and, much less that of a merger, was out of the question. But Monday evening brought along a coup de theatre: Emil Boc and Theodor Stolojan said this unlikely merger would take place and quickly for that matter, to give rise to a new political party called the Liberal Democratic Party. Emil Boc:

“We have decided to propose to our parties' boards to establish a new centre-right political party, the outcome of the union of the Democratic Party and the Liberal Democratic Party. The new party will be affiliated to the European People’s Party and will keep within it the center and liberal values.”
Theodor Stolojan:

“This party will be a strong political party, which will present a consistent, efficient and steady governing program for the country's progress boosting living standards.”

The two parties' merger decision in a mere couple of hours remains a mystery. The act usually requires weeks' or months' worth of talks. Newspapers in Bucharest have not had enough time to make sense of what lies behind the mystery, which, however, rather seems to be Polichinelle's secret. GANDUL writes that the pro-presidential Liberal Democrats have entered the new party to comply with president Traian Basescu's wish. Basescu is the former president of the Democratic Party. EVENIMENTUL ZILEI, close to the presidency, headlines: “Basescu compels the birth of the Liberal Democratic Party.” Ludovic Orban, deputy president of the ruling National Liberal Party, which has seen Stolojan's Liberal Democrats group splinter off from it, ironically pointed out:

“Basescu has ordered this, while Boc and Stolojan have carried out the order. This denouement was hard to predict following the statements made by Mister Boc, who said that an alliance could only emerge in the wake of the election. But apparently, they were summoned up to the Presidency and they 'democratically' accepted the president's order.”
