Romanian director Cristian Mungiu was the favourite of the European Film Academy Gala Awards hosted by Berlin at the weekend. Mungiu’s film “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days” won the Grand prize of the European Film Academy, the European equivalent of the Oscar, and also the “Best Director Award”. It is for the first time that a Romanian film wins such a prestigious distinction. “I am happy both for the fact that I won this award and that I can tell beautiful stories in films” the Romanian director said while on stage.

“4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days ” is a drama related to the illegal abortions performed in Romania during the communist regime; it is a story about decision making, responsibility and choices in life, about solidarity and friendship. The film, that literally charmed Europe, received the Palme d’Or Award in Cannes this year and also many other important distinctions such as the FIPRESCI grand prize (awarded by the International Film Critics Federation).

Director Cristian Mungiu:
“The best director and best movie awards mean a recognition of the fact that a European independent cinema, coming from an eastern country, receives the acknowledgement that film making deserves; this also means that there are no biased attitudes at this level, that you do not need a large budget to tell a story that is being listened to”.

“4 months , 3 weeks ,2 days ” is Romania’s proposal for the Oscar race, at the “best foreign film” category; the Oscar Awards will be held in February 2008. Film critic Manuela Cernat has pointed to the great talent of director Mungiu.
"The prizes he has won so far might positively influence the choice of the US Film Academy members when they will have to vote for the best foreign film. Let’s hope we’ll be lucky again. It would be an absolutely unique event, a moment written in the stars, a first for Romanian cinematography which may not happen again in the near future”.
