Dear friends, RRI invites you to participate in a new prize-winning contest entitled “Myths and reality in Bistrita Nasaud county”.

Bistrita Nasaud is a very beautiful area located in the north of Romania, boasting a rich history, important cultural values and special people. It is also home to Dracula’s Castle, situated in the Tihuta mountain pass, in the Bargau Mountains.

We invite you to tune in to RRI’s programmes and access RRI’s Website, in order to provide the correct answers, in writing, to a number of questions. Get them right, and you could be a winner! The contest will last until posting date March 31st 2008. There are two Grand Prizes - two 9 day (8-night) trips, for two persons, with full board, in the month of June 2008. The winners of the Grand prizes will be accommodated in 3 locations: the “Golden Crown”- the most beautiful hotel in Bistrita,

the “Dracula Castle Hotel” in the Tihuta Mountain Pass and a stud farm near the town of Beclean.

This contest is sponsored by “DRACULA” CASTEL HOTEL COMPANY. Another important partner is the ROMSILVA National Forest Authority, which administers the stud farm near Beclean. As usual the winners will have to cover their external transport costs and visa expenses for Romania, should they need a visa.

We also have many other prizes related to Bistrita Nasaud county, offered by our partners: The Prefect’s Office and the Bistrita Nasaud County Council, the Bistrita Town Hall, the Bistrita Nasaud Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, the Bistrita Union of Fine Artists, the Nasaud Orthodox Archpriest’s Office, the Bistrita Nasaud Museum Compound, the Folk Crafts County Center and the firms Electroplast, Comelf, Rombat and Teraplast. The media partners are two well known dailies from Bistrita - “Mesagerul” and “Rasunetul”.

The town of Bistrita, the capital of Bistrita Nasaud county, was first documented in 1264, being an old German burgh and a valuable historical center; it now numbers as many as 80 thousand inhabitants. Other important towns are Nasaud, with almost 10 thousand inhabitants, Beclean, a one-industry town with 11 thousand inhabitants, and Sangeorz-Bai, a spa for gastric disorders with 10 thousand inhabitants, boasting many mineral water springs.

Bistrita Nasaud has a population of about 320 thousand inhabitants, covers 5355 square kilometers, and has a varied relief. It stretches towards the Transylvanian Plain and includes the contact area between the Eastern Carpathians with the Transylvanian Plateau, as well as the upper basin of the Somesul Mare river and a small part of the middle basin of the Mures river. 48% of the area is covered by mountains.

In Bistrita, poet Andrei Muresanu composed the song “Awake, ye, Romania”, Romania’s national anthem today. The town also has a museum house devoted to the poet. Other famous personalities from Bistrita include writer Liviu Rebreanu, poet George Cosbuc, priest Grigore Moisil, archeologist and numismatist Constantin I. Moisil, Ion Pop-Reteganul, probably the greatest folk expert of Transylvania, and more than 20 Romanian academicians originating from Bistrita.

The carstic area of Rodnei Mountains includes caves of a great speleological importance, such as the Grota Zanelor cave and the Izvorul Tausoarelor cave, the deepest cave in Romania, measuring 478.5 meters. Its underground galleries stretch for almost 16.5 kms.

the Piatra Fantanele area (in the Tihuta mountain pass) with the “Dracula” Castle hotel, the Colibita region, with its reservoir and dam on the Bistrita river, the Wine Valley, and the Arcalia Dendrological park boasting numerous local and exotic plants. Of the monuments worth visiting we can mention the wooden churches in Sarata, Silivasu de Campie, Salcuta, Zagra, the evangelical churches in Henna and Dispa as well as the “Sirul Sugalete” medieval houses from Bistrita, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Evangelical Church in Bistrita

the Evangelical Church the Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Cathedral in Bistrita, the glacial lakes Lala Mare and Lala Mic, lake Zagra, the geological Piatra Corbului Park located in the Calimani mountains, as well as the Salt Mountain in the Saratel and Piatra Fantanele area, located at 1100 meters altitude, where skiers can practice their favorite sport.
