The “Sibiu – European Capital of Culture 2007” Programme, aimed at presenting the multicultural profile of the central Romanian city, boasting an eight century history, has come to an end. The official closing of the programme is scheduled for December 1st, Romania’s National Day.
Two of the reasons why Sibiu was chosen as European Capital of Culture, along with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, were the history and language of the city. According to specialists, there are many similarities between the language spoken by the descendants of the Saxon colonists who founded Sibiu in the Middle Ages and the ancient language of Luxembourg.

Throughout the year, thousands of artists have transformed the medieval squares and chic streets of the city into performance stages. Thousands of locals and close to one million Romanian and foreign tourists were enthralled by various parades, open air performances and fireworks. According to the British newspaper “The Guardian”, thanks to its charm and artistic events, Sibiu ranks 9th in the top 50 tourist destinations in the world.

Several significant events which usually take place in other Romanian cities, this year came to Sibiu, such as the International “George Enescu” Festival, TIFF – the most popular Romanian film festival, the MTV Romania Music Awards and the Awards Gala of the Romanian Theatre Union. Visitors to Sibiu this year also included some high profile politicians, like Hans-Gert Pottering, President of the European Parliament, Duke Henri of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, and the German President Horst Kohler.

The authorities embarked on a wide-ranging promotional campaign for the “Sibiu – European Capital of Culture 2007” Programme, which started in September 2006 and continued throughout 2007. The campaign included several exhibitions organized at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and UNESCO House in Paris. Ads were broadcast on well known TV stations like National Geographic, the Travel Channel and Euronews, and also on the Internet.

The National Authority for Tourism was also involved in promoting Sibiu in various cities in Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the United States and Japan.
One of the few disappointments was that the title of European Capital of Culture did not get Sibiu on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Still, the authorities gave assurances that they would continue to pursue the matter. We recall that Sibiu was the first European Capital of Culture to be chosen from a country which at that time was not a member of the European Union.
