After going to the electorate with respect to the introduction of the uninominal vote, Romanian President Traian Basescu also held talks with parties on the same issue. The outcome was similar. Just 25% of the electorate turned out for the referendum, which consequently failed to pass, while the consultations saw the absence of important parties, both from the ruling coalition and the opposition. The president did not keep his anger in check and was very clear:

“I don't want to see people who have deemed it wise not to attend the talk, eventually preventing me from fulfilling a constitutional duty, namely mediating political solutions to major problems. I wouldn't want to see them knocking on the presidency's door when governments are being formed. They should instead remain where they stand today.”

But as several newspapers note, the methods of appointing a prime minister and forming a government are ruled by the Constitution. The daily ROMANIA LIBERA, which has a pro-presidential stance, writes that Traian Basescu, whose smiling confidence has faded away, rushed to summon parties days after the referendum failed to pass, although it was clear he would not reach an understanding with them.

The newspaper ZIUA, which is generally against the president, enlarges on a conspiratorial plan plotted by the Basescu administration to manipulate voters through polls. ZIUA also talks about a suspicious vote rigging using new software, adding that four fifths of those who turned out for the referendum, voted for the pure uninominal vote. However, considering that they only make up 21% of the wider electorate, what is the president’s basis for continuing to promote the electoral system he wants?

GANDUL daily provides an explanation, recalling that Traian Basescu said, after consultations, that the Democratic Party and the Liberal Democratic Party uphold the majority uninomal vote. GANDUL adds that a few years ago, the social democrats filed a draft law regarding the same subject. According to the newspaper, the three parties have enough votes in parliament to approve the system.

The daily COTIDIANUL, another pro-presidential paper, goes farther and claims that the electorate, who 'slapped themselves in the face', are to be blamed for Basescu's proposal not making it through the referendum. “Should Romanians who did not turn out to vote be applauded? COTIDIANUL asks, before answering in the negative. The daily's conclusion is spelled out in the article's first sentence: “A people can make a mistake”. We can only add that “the people” should also include the president, MPs and other politicians.
