In 2006, Romania had 2 billionaires in US dollars. In 2007 it has 9 of them. Since last year, the cumulative wealth of the 300 richest Romanians went up 11 billion dollars. According to “Capital” magazine the richest Romanian is Dinu Patriciu, with an estimated wealth of 3.3 billion dollars. At the beginning of September, Dinu Patriciu made the headlines after selling 75% of his shares in Rompetrol Holding to KazMunaiGaz, Kazakhstan’s state oil company. That was one of the largest transactions in post-communist Romania. The second riches Romanian is George Becali, owner of Steaua Bucuresti football club, president of the New Generation Party, which on Sunday’s Euro-parliamentary elections failed to glean the 5% needed to have a representative in the European Parliament. Becali’s fortune is estimated at 3 billion dollars, earned from real estate, football, and industrial activities. Next is Ion Tiriac, with 2.4 billion from banking, insurance, automotive, commerce, and real estate. No less than 160 of the people in the top 300 have invested in real estate, which has boomed in the last 3 or 4 years. Iulia Dinu is an executive director of Ringier Group:

“The growth registered by the top 300 wealthiest is representative for the Romanian economy, which has enjoyed good growth in all areas in the last 5 to 8 years. The one sector that contributed most to increasing individual wealth is real estate, but not only. We are talking here about the capital market, we are talking communications, IT, and a multitude of other smaller sectors, but which lead to solid growth”.

Also part of the 300 club is controversial businessman Sorin Ovidiu Vantu, with financial, media and real estate investments, and the brothers Viorel and Ioan Micula, who have built a genuine food and beverage empire in the west of the country. They are followed by the Paunescu’s, who have also invested in the real estate industry, and also in hotels, then by Iosif Constantin Dragan, with activities in oil, publishing, real estate, and transportation. Ioan Niculae - foreign trade, agriculture and insurance - and Zoltan Teszari, in communication. Former football glory Gheorghe Hagi is also in the Capital Top 300 Richest Romanians. He is the richest Romanian athlete with a wealth estimated at 47 million dollars.
