'The referendum fails! A new status quo on the table”, the daily Romania Libera headlines, as it points to a new political order established by the European Parliamentary election: the Democratic Party, the Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party and the Liberal Democratic Party. The daily writes that people’s interest in the elections hit its lowest since 1990 and ascribes this negative record to the vote's lack of domestic significance, an 'invisible' electoral campaign and the voters' disgust in responding to the politicians' cheap demagogy. The daily Evenimentul Zilei ironically points out that '”Exporting Demagogues is Over”. The characters the newspaper refers to are Corneliu Vadim Tudor, the leader of the nationalist-populist Greater Romania Party, Gigi Becali, head of the New Generation Party and manager of the Steaua football club and businessman Dan Voiculescu, head of the Conservative Party for whom the European election has brought about complete failure.

But Evenimentul Zilei also dwells on the surprising outcome for the Liberal Democratic Party, which had split from the National Liberal Party a year ago, and has managed a leap above the 5% electoral threshold. The daily Ziua comments on the modest results reaped by the Social Democratic Party, the main opposition party. The daily believes Sunday's ballot will cause a rift within the party and will make it incapable of playing the role of a strong and united party in tune with its leadership, even for the sake of its image. According to the daily Gandul, the Social Democratic Party is now forced to find an ally if it wants to participate in a future government. “The double vote on Sunday gave political leaders a new opportunity to state their positions themselves in relation to president Basescu”, the Jurnalul National writes, emphasizing that, after Sunday's ballot, the political tension will continue to remain high.
