WEATHER SWINGS IN ROMANIA (19.11.2007) |
(2007-11-19) |
Last updated: 2007-11-20 14:21 EET |
For several days now Romania has been confronting bad weather, strong winds and heavy rains, sleet and snow. Winter has settled all over the country and has already affected numerous people and caused significant damage. The most affected regions are in southern Romania. Tens of houses have been flooded, while storms have left tens of localities in the dark. In Bucharest and other Romanian cities the wind knocked down several trees, billboards and traffic lights. Several drivers found their cars damaged.
While the south and centre of the country confront floods and landslides, the north battles snowstorms and snow banks. In localities from hilly and mountainous areas, the layer of snow already measures several dozens of centimetres and in some areas even one metre. Several villages have been isolated and authorities wait for the snowstorm to settle in order to intervene. Mountain rescuers gave avalanche alerts and warned tourists to be appropriately equipped and to use only marked tourist routes.
Still, snow came like a blessing for tourists, who descended into mountain ski resorts at the weekend. Traffic has been slowed down and is running in winter conditions, yet there are no blocked national roads. Due to the high number of car crashes and accidents, police has called on drivers to adjust their speed to the slippery roads and low visibility.
All sea harbours have been closed down due to stormy weather which may jeopardise navigation. At sea the wind speed may even reach 90 km/h. The activity on the Danube – Black Sea Canal has also been restricted. The naval authorities of the Constanta Port have extended until Tuesday sea storms alerts and have called on naval crews to take all the necessary precautions avoid possible problems.
The cold has already claimed the first human lives, including those of two babies. Unfortunately, news from meteorologists is not encouraging, forecasts saying the bad weather will continue for at least a day or two.
