On Wednesday, in Slovenia, Romanian President Traian Basescu continued his diplomatic campaign aimed at ensuring Romania’s accession to the Schengen area in March 2011.
During his visit to Slovenia, President Traian Basescu said that Bucharest met all the Schengen accession requirements and rejected the possibility that a European government could block this process due to collateral issues, such as the nomad Roma groups who have lately stirred some turmoil in the western world.
Such an approach would actually be a violation of the Accession Treaty, the president stressed: “Accession to the Schengen area is a technical issue. There are six reports drawn up by the European Commission on Romania’s progress regarding the adoption of the Schengen standards, and all of them are positive. The last report is to be drawn up in December, and we believe that Romania meets all the necessary conditions to become a Schengen member.”
President Basescu’s host, Slovenian President Danilo Turk, stated that his country too supported Romania’s Schengen accession, saying he did not see any reason why it should be postponed. Turk thus joined Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and German Chancellor Angela Merkel who, for the past 6 months, have voiced their support for Romania’s accession.
This is also an important stake for the neighboring Republic of Moldova, a country with a predominantly Romanian speaking population, which is a EU accession candidate. Moldovan deputy Prime Minister Ion Negrei has told the Bucharest daily Evenimentul Zilei that community borders can only be secured as part of a process that involves Moldova’s integration into the EU.
