UNPRECEDENTED CRISIS IN THE ROMANIAN – ITALIAN RELATIONS (5.11.2007) |
(2007-11-05) |

In Italy, hundreds of people have protested against immigrants. A meeting staged by a far right movement brought to the forefront explicit slogans like “Italy belongs to Italians” and “Romanians, OUT !”. According to Radio Romania correspondent in Rome, protesters wrote on one of the banners: “Italian woman killed by a gypsy. Italy pays in blood the madness of immigration”. In a football game held last weekend, Adrian Mutu, the Romanian star-player of the Fiorentina football team, was booed and sworn at by Lazio Roma supporters, known for their Fascist nostalgia.
Mass media in Bucharest quote sociologists and psychologists saying that such reactions are normal for a people who no longer feel safe in its own country. Politicians in the peninsula have jumped at the opportunity to speculate on the public opinion’s sensitivity. Former right wing Prime minister Silvio Berlusconi stated that, if he were still in power, he would have imposed restrictions on Romanian workers, similar to those imposed by Spain, Germany, Austria or Great Britain. In response, the Justice Minister of the left wing Italian Government Clemente Mastela, has called on the opposition to avoid throwing gas on the fire. In the meantime, his subordinates started to enforce the recently passed legislation, allowing for the expulsion of EU citizens who threaten public order in Italy.
The first Romanian wrongdoers have already been sent back to Bucharest, while city prefect houses continue to make up lists with other people to be expelled. The National Initiative Party, an insignificant Romanian party with an electoral percentage bellow the error margin of polls, makes a populist speculation and threatens to picket the Italian Embassy and consulates in Romania. Caught in the middle, Romanian Prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu tries to convey messages meant to calm both domestic public opinion and foreign partners:
“We will not tolerate any violation of the law, but at the same time we have to protect the lives of Romanian citizens living in Italy. This is the government’s responsibility. The aim of the measures we apply is to protect the rights of Romanian citizens living in Italy and ensure a solid and motivated context for the mechanism of expulsion.”
President Traian Basescu condemned the illegalities and violence committed by Romanian citizens in Italy, but also the abuses targeting them. He called on the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest to:
“Inform the European Commission about the implementation of the new Italian legislation on public safety. Romanians who have already been repatriated were given no chance to turn to the Italian judiciary over a 30 days period. Also, a project on social integration of Rroma citizens at European level must be established. The issue of the Rroma population is not only a problem of Romania.”
Still, the newspapers consider that the source of this evil is seeded within this country. Under the title “Robbing through Europe, with the Government’s consent”, the daily ROMANIA LIBERA expressed the regret that “the tens of thousands of Romanians who work hard for the money they cannot earn at home” have to take the blame for a handful of violent offenders. The same daily asks a rhetorical question, Why are those offenders in Rome, and not behind bars, in Romania ?”
