For two weeks, Canada is hosting the Romanian Film Festival. The festival, venued by the cities of Montreal and Quebec, will close its doors on November the 15th. More than 30 films by outstanding Romanian directors, who have reaped many national and international prizes, will be screened during the festival. The long reels to be projected in Montreal and Quebec are directed by outstanding young Romanian directors such as Cristian Mungiu, Cristi Puiu, Nae Caranfil, the late Cristian Nemescu and Corneliu Porumboiu.

As a premiere, director Nicolae Margineanu will launch his latest film “The Fiancees of America”, a drama with Marcel Iures in one of the leading roles. He is one of the Romanian actors who stood out in American super-productions. Another film to be presented during the festival is a movie by Cristian Nemescu, the director who died in a car accident in the summer of 2006, aged only 28. His film “California Dreamin” (Endless),won the “Un Certain Regard Section” in the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.

The most successful Romanian film at the moment is “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” by Cristian Mungiu. Already screened in Canada, the film was appreciated by film critics in that country. The “Toronto Sun” paper terms it as one of the best cinematic productions of the year, whereas “National Post” says it is a film difficult to ignore, impossible to forget.
The movie, which tells the story of a girl who made an illegal abortion in communist Romania, won the Palme d’Or in the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, the Prize of the International Cinema Press Federation and the Education prize for its artistic quality and pedagogical interest. “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days” has been selected, together with 42 other films for the Prizes of the European Film Academy, which will be awarded in Berlin, on December the 1st 2007. The Romanian long-reel has also won the Hollywood World Award, which somehow anticipates what foreign films have high chances of winning an Oscar.
