NO HOLDING BACK IN POWER - OPPOSITION CLASHES 12/10/2010

Political pundits tend to agree on the fact that the Romanian political class is less the solution and more a part of the problem, in times of crisis. The self-sufficiency of the Power and the methodical boycott of the Opposition risk to paralyze the good functioning of the Parliament. Once again, that happens at a time when everyone is expecting legislative packages capable of thawing the frozen economy. For some time now, the Opposition has stopped taking part in the activities of the Chamber of Deputies and has imperiously called for the replacement of its current president, Roberta Anastase, whom they accuse of having allowed the passing of the government’s pension bill by fraud.

On Monday, the protest went beyond the Parliament’ building. Posing as mediator, president Traian Basescu summoned all parliamentary parties for consultations over the pension law. The discussions, although dominated by urgent social and economic issues, also focused on the new pension and education laws, the state budget for next year, the absorption of European funds, as well as selling minor share parcels that the state still holds with various companies and public utilities on the stock exchange.

However, only the Liberal-Democrats showed up at the meeting, along with their junior partners in the ruling coalition, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, the UDMR and the National Union for Romania’s Progress (UNPR) and minority representatives, who traditionally support the Executive. In perfect synchronization, the Social-Democratic Party, the PSD, the National Liberal Party, the PNL and the Conservative Party, the PC declined the President’s invitation. Their leaders accuse president Basescu of “defending political party-switching, by inviting the UNPR, a party that has surfaced via a people’s vote rigging”. The Social-Democrats referred to the group of senators and deputies elected in 2008 on Social-Democrat and Liberal lists who then sided with the Power. “I will stand in for the Opposition in these talks”, the President sneered, which made his opponents label his reaction as a bad joke.

“Consultations without any results” is the dry conclusion drawn by Adevarul paper. Jurnalul National, the most radical anti-presidential newspaper, reprimands president Basescu for his failed attempt to mediate the discussions. The paper writes that the UNPR “has sprung within the circle of power”, with “retail” members who aim to create a so-called alternative left wing to the PSD with the approval of the presidency. Although an apologist of the Power, even Evenimentul Zilei paper writes that quote “the very idea that the Opposition can be substituted is wrong, even as a joke.” Generally adopting a neutral tone, Gandul paper accuses the Opposition of committing quote the “presidential sin” of vanity” since in their actions against the Power, the PSD and the PNL seem to believe that once the Government falls, all economic difficulties would disappear, while disregarding president Traian Basescu would make him vanish into thin air” end of quote.
