The Romanian national football team on Saturday made a giant leap towards qualifying for the Euro 2008 as they beat the Dutch squad 1 – nil in Constantsa, south-eastern Romania.
The game ‘s only goal was scored by Dorin Goian on 71 minutes. Cristian Chivu had a free-kick from the left hand-side and Paul Codrea’s header deflected the ball to the Dutch posts. Guest team’ keeper Stekelenburg denied the header only to place the ball well within Dorin Goian’s shooting range, and the Romanian struck home close to the Dutch posts. Romanias have thus secured the lead in Group G, with three 3 points ahead of Holland and 5 of Bulgaria.
The three teams rank as favourites for the two qualifying positions at stake, but they have yet there more games to play. On Wednesday Romania are up against Luxembourg, away from home. Also away from home will be the match pitching Romania against Bulgaria on November 17. The last match to be played by coach Victor Piturca’s trainees is against Albania on November 21, this time on home soil. Dutch media has already provided its barbed comments at their team’ s performance in Romania. “ 5 for Holland” Limburgs Dagblad headines.” Van Basten’s pupils managed to be in control of the game only for the first half.
Then all of a sudden the Romanians turned into acid rain for Van Basten’s squad. Holland lost in the wake of a chaotic second half, yet their defeat does not have terrible consequences, Linburgs Dagblat also headlines. Voetbal International wrote that “Holland’s departure to Constantsa proved fatal for the team”. The aforementioned newspaper also wrote that “Holland was in the lead for the most part of the game, yet they lost.
Goian can be crowned as the winner of the game. Holland’ s having the upper hand in the first half did not yield many scoring opportunities, as they were lacking finesse and chance. After the break the guests conceded initiative, their panicky game leaving room for lots for scoring opportunities on the part of the Romanians, who knew how to capitalize on that.” And to cap it all, De Telegraaf headlines “A Black Night at the Black Sea.” Should they qualify for the Euro 2008, the prize money for the national squad is likely to be huge.
Former goalkeeper Florin Prunea, the incumbent Director of the Romanian Football Federation’s International relations Department told a TV programme that the highest sum of money to be cashed by the full-timers, that is by players with the greatest number of minutes on the pitch - will be 100,000 euros a piece. In another TV programme, Ionut Lupescu, the Federation’s General manager endorsed that and said that out of the 5 mn euros the Romanian Football Federation will receive from the UEFA should the team qualify , 2.5 mn will go to the team’s technical staff and the players.
