Reforms in the field of the judiciary, the fight against corruption and agriculture are still sensitive issues to be tackled by the government in Bucharest, despite the progress the country has made so far. This was the assessment made by the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso. Mr Barroso’s description can also be found in an interview he gave to the daily ROMANIA LIBERA, during his visit to Romania at the weekend. Just as before the country’s EU accession, emphasis was placed on the required efforts, highlighting the fact that “a completely modern system, with a democratic responsibility and having the clear-cut determination to fight corruption and organized crime is first and foremost in the interest and for the benefit of Romanian citizens.”

The statements Mr Barroso made both at the meetings with Romanian high-ranking officials and at the European Ecumenical Assembly in Sibiu and later on enlarged upon for the ROMANIA LIBERA daily newspaper actually X-rayed the way Romania is being perceived in Brussels, nearly one year after its EU integration. ”One of the specific competencies Bucharest brings into the EU is the knowledge of the Balkans and of Eastern Europe” Barroso also said, highlighting the region’s most needed stabilization in the wake of a series of tragedies that have so deeply plagued the Balkans. “Romania and Bulgaria have also increased the number of Orthodox countries to have joined the EU, and that has a strong bearing on the community’s cultural diversity” the President of the European Commission added.

Mr Barroso also made specific reference to a series of European foreign policy issues, two of which are of special interest to Bucharest: the future of the Serb province of Kossovo, a predominantly Albanian region, and the Black Sea cooperation. “Kossovo is a European issue that needs to be solved and the parties involved should reach a consensus all by themselves” Jose Manuel Durao Barroso said, also reminding of the solution-seeking talks with the US and Russia. As for the Black Sea, the European official thinks Romania has a special interest in the region, and the European Union can greatly benefit from Romania’s knowledge and expertise in the field. In terms of warnings, agriculture is one sensitive chapter targeted by such warnings, and in the wake of the ongoing audit, Romania runs the risk of the activation of the safeguard clause and the reduction by 25% of the allocated subsidies per hectare. And last but not least Barroso mentioned the energy issue, saying that “it is for Romania’s as well as for any other country’s long-term interest to have an energy market completely integrated in the European one, with an energy system reliable in terms of supply and distribution.”
