Ecumenism is a movement born in the 19th century among theologians concerned about the negative effects of the split of Christianity. After Basel and Graz, the European Ecumenical Assembly took place for the first time in an Orthodox country. Its aim was not to give solutions to dogmatic disputes but to find out ways leading to common action, in the light of the essence of Christianity promoted by all Churches. The message and orientation of contemporary Christianity clearly come out from the 10 recommendations set forth in the final message adopted by the participants in the Third European Ecumenical Assembly. They urge to the continuation of inter-religion dialogue, but also to the protection of the environment, to a fair and honest trade and to the eradication of poverty.

The involvement of the Christian Church in the contemporary life is ever more intense and aims to root out several extremely harmful phenomena and practices. The participants launched an appeal to peace and consider that violence and terrorism in the name of religion actually turn into a negation of religion. More than that, Christians are called upon to observe the others' religious freedom. Drawing attention to the fact that the process of economic globalisation and the division of society into winners and losers have harmful effects socially and ecologically, European Christians are advised to back the UN objectives seeking the eradication of poverty, particularly Africa's deep poverty. The document also recommends the launch of a consultative process regarding Europe's responsibility to environmental protection and the observance of the ethnic minorities' rights.

Migration was a topic widely debated in Sibiu and the conclusions of the meeting call on all European states to adopt measures in favour of the legal migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, to fight human trafficking and exploitation. European construction was one of the main issues discussed by the Ecumenical Assembly, also benefiting from the participation of the leaders of the pan-European political projects like the European Union and the Council of Europe. The attending prelates appreciated the European institutions' commitment to an open dialogue with the Churches of the continent and stressed in their message that – quote - “if Europe initially was a political project designed to ensure peace, now it must become a Europe of people, rather than a mere economic area”, while praising the European institutions' commitment to an open dialogue with the Churches of the continent.
