After a scorching and very dry summer, temperatures in Romania suddenly dropped 10 degrees Celsius below normal for this time of the year, while storms and torrential rains have swept eastern and south-eastern Romania. Several people lost their lives and numerous localities have been left without electricity. Villages swept by flood-waters have become common news footage in Romania. However, the novelty this time has been the images from the town of Tecucci, where cars were carried away by the torrents that flooded the streets. Rail and road traffic has also been disrupted.

Romania must continue its reform process – this was the main idea conveyed by the European Commission president Jose Manuel Durao Barroso. The European official visited Romania and made a speech in the Romanian Parliament. He mentioned Bucharest’s contribution to European security, energy policy and combating organized crime. Barosso also said that the elections for the European Parliament due in November are a first chance for Romanians to get involved in the construction of a United Europe. Jose Manuel Durao Barroso:

“Romania’s accession to the European Union has been a success story, both for Romania and for the EU. Romania, however, still needs to implement crucial reforms to reap the full benefits of all the changes taking place in Europe and in the world. National Parliaments, including yours, will play an increasingly important role when it comes to shaping Europe’s future. The European Parliamentary elections offer an important opportunity in terms of spreading the message about Romania’s place in Europe. Enlargement has proved to be a major source of strength for Europe.”

The president of the European Commission also travelled to the city of Sibiu in central Romania, which has been designated a European capital of culture together with Luxembourg. Sibiu is currently playing host to the 3rd European Ecumenical Assembly. Jose Durao Barroso hailed the role played by the church in the European construction, adding that only shared values can lead to a political entity such as the European Union. Sibiu is the first city from a majority Orthodox country to host the European Ecumenical Assembly, which brings together the representatives of all the Christian denominations in Europe. The Assembly promotes inter-religious dialogue and debates topical issues of the contemporary reality, such as migration, justice and peace.

The president of Romania, Traian Basescu, has called on Romania’s ambassadors and consuls to get involved to the highest extent in European issues and to consolidate relations with the eastern countries, more exactly with those in the Caspian regions and the Western Balkans. Foreign minister Adrian Cioroianu was also present at the meeting of all Romanian ambassadors and consuls. He presented Bucharest’s foreign policy strategy for the next 10 years. This strategy, he says, has been correlated with Romania’s national security strategy. Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu:

“For 17 years Romania’s foreign policy has focused on two main objectives – evidently essential objectives: - NATO and European Union integration. Now it’s time to resume relations with some of Romania’s friends and to make steps down different paths.”

The future of the province of Kosovo, which has been under United Nations administration since 1999 was among the issues discussed at the meeting of Romanian diplomats. President Traian Basescu recalled that this autumn the international community must make a decision with regard to the status of the Serb province:

“We stand firm on this issue. In our opinion, Serbia is a sovereign and independent state whose territorial integrity must not be infringed upon. If the international community decides otherwise, Romania will regard that decision, as a partner in the decision making process, and will not oppose that decision.”

A Romanian soldier has been killed and 4 others wounded in Afghanistan, on a mission in the province of Zabul. Senior sergeant Aurel Marcu (31 years old) and his colleagues, were in an armoured vehicle that ran over a mine. Four Romanian soldiers have died in Afghanistan in operations as part of the International Security and Assistance Force. Romania has deployed some 855 troops to Afghanistan.

Classical music is being celebrated in Bucharest until September the 23rd. The Romanian capital is playing host to the 18th George Enescu International Music Festival. George Enescu was Romania’s greatest composer of classical music. He is celebrated in this festival, which brings to life 35 of his works. 9 of the world’s top symphony orchestras are to perform in Bucharest as part of the George Enescu Festival, which lasts for no less than 23 days. The festival also includes a contest, which brings together 208 young musicians from 38 countries competing in 3 sections: violin, piano and composition.
