Until September the 23rd, Bucharest will be a true world capital of classical music. The 18th edition of the international festival named after Romania’s greatest composer, violinist and conductor George Enescu started on Saturday at the Palace Concert Hall in Bucharest with an opera show. Performing was the National Opera House Orchestra in Bucharest conducted by Gheorghe Costin and 13 Romanian singers performing on lyrical stages abroad, including Nicoleta Ardelean, Stefan Ignat, Elena Mosuc, Doina Dumitru and Adina Nitescu. Here’s what the artistic director of the festival and the director of the Vienna State Opera, Ioan Hollender, said at the opening of the festival in Bucharest:
“This opening concert is a little different from the previous years because it is given entirely by vocal artists, all of whom come from Romania. By this concert, we would like to pay tribute to two things. First of all, we want to honour the most precious, most sensitive and most valuable instrument, namely the human voice. Secondly, we want to introduce music and art lovers in Romania to a whole series of Romanian singers who are more or less unknown in their home country because they have been working and living abroad.”
The festival boasts a record number of different artists, orchestras and conductors. Of the scheduled 125 events, 100 take place in Bucharest, while the rest are due in several cities across the country. As a producer of the festival, the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation will promote the George Enescu Festival and Contest on all its stations. To conclude, let us just mention that there are also 200 young performers from 35 countries participating in the contest section of the festival.
