ROMANIAN FOOTBALL TEAMS IN THE EUROPEAN CUPS (31.08.07)

For the fifth time in the club’s history, Steaua Bucharest, has again entered the Champions League’s groups. Although the other Romanian representatives in the European Cups have failed to meet expectations, Steaua secured their Champions League qualification after clinching a two-nil win against the champions of Belarus, BATE Borisov on Wednesday night, in a match counting towards the second round of the qualifiers’ last leg. The score in the first game was two-all. Steaua Bucharest relied both on experienced players, also making the most of the excellent shape of Columbian keeper Robinson Zapata, who saved several good chances the visitors created during the game, when the Romanians managed an efficient though lackluster show.

The situation will be different in the Champions League’s groups, as the Romanians have been included in group H, together with the Gunners from Arsenal, Slavia Prague and the winner of the delayed game pitching FC Seville against AEK Athens. According to experts, this may be one of the most difficult groups. In the 2005 - 2006 edition, the Gunners played in the Champions League’s finals, where they conceded defeat to Barcelona. Seville emerged as last year’s winner of the UEFA Cup, after having eliminated several valuable teams, among which Steaua Bucharest. Slavia Praga is another strong side playing in group H; the Czech have qualified for the League’s groups after a double win against Ajax Amsterdam. Steaua Bucharest will first take on Slavia Prague in an away game on September the 19th.

If Steaua Bucharest have obtained their fifth qualification for the Champions League, number five is not of good omen for Dinamo Bucharest, which have failed for the fifth time to qualify for the most prestigious football competition in Europe. On Tuesday night in Bucharest, Romania’s champions conceded a three-one defeat to Italian side Lazio Rome, in the last qualifying leg. The first game in Rome ended in a one-all draw. After having been eliminated from the Champions League, Dinamo Bucharest will play right in the first round of the UEFA Cup, where our country boasts another representative, namely Rapid Bucharest, holder of Romania’s Cup.

Another two Romanian teams have failed to qualify for the UEFA Cup: Otelul Galati, from the south-east of Romania and CFR Cluj from central Romania. Otelul have been eliminated by Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Sofia after a three-one defeat on aggregate, three-one to Lokomotiv in Sofia and a nil—all draw in Romania. Wasting many goal opportunities Otelul failed to capitalize on the home game and had to leave the competition. Two weeks ago, CFR Cluj lost one-three the home game they played against Anorthosis Famagusta from Cyprus. Playing away on Thursday they managed only a lackluster uninspired play which brought them only a draw.
