After 15 weeks during which Romanians spent larger amounts of money to buy lottery tickets, a lucky winner finally grabbed the jackpot of more than 10 million Euros. The lucky numbers at Sunday’s draw were 46, 35, 42, 1,2 and 34. It was this combination that brought the winner the highest jackpot in the history of the Romanian Lottery. He chose a combination of only 6 numbers, on a simple ticket, that he bought from a lottery agency in Calarasi county, southern Romania, for 1.3 Euros.
However, the winner will not get the whole amount of money, as he or she will have to pay taxes to the state. No less than 25% of the jackpot will go to the state budget. Even so, the winner will take home a considerable sum of money.
The highest jackpot in the history of the Romanian Lottery has attracted millions of Romanians. We could even speak of a real national fever, a fact proven by the long queues in front of lottery agencies over the past few weeks. Buying lottery tickets have been not only Romanians but also foreign citizens, such as Bulgarians, Italians, Arabs, Hungarians and Serbs. It is also worth mentioning there are 60 winners in the second category and 3,000 others in the third category.
As a first, attending the draw of lots were foreign observers, representatives of the firms which provided the lottery boxes and the data collecting soft. Thus, the management of the Romanian Lottery tried to eliminate suspicion and put and end to the large number of speculations made over the past few weeks. Nobody managed to grab the jackpot for more than 3 months and a half.
The buyer of a simple ticket stood slim chances to win the jackpot: one in 14 million. There were people who spent incredibly large amounts of money to but lottery tickets. To be 100% sure that they would win the jackpot, they should have invested the double of the jackpot- that is some 20 million Euros. Until Sunday, the highest jackpot in the history of the Romania lottery had stood at 6 million Euros. It was won in January 2006.
