Romania has submitted its proposal for the 2008 Awards to the American Film Academy. This year’s submission has been Catalin Mitulescu’s “The Way I Spent the End of the World” and in 2006 Romania’s proposal for the best foreign language film was Cristi Puiu’s “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu”.
Romania’s submission for 2008 was decided by a jury made of Romanian film critics and filmmakers. Cristian Mungiu’s film was selected from a large number of Romanian feature films, such as “California Dreamin’” directed by the late Cristian Nemescu , “The Paper Will Be Blue” by Radu Muntean or “Ryna” by Ruxandra Zenide.
The film “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” has entered the competition for final balloting on the Foreign Language Film Award. The nominations will be announced on January 22nd 2008 and the 80th Annual Academy Awards Gala will take place on February 24th, 2008.
Director Cristian Mungiu is currently in Paris, where he is preparing the French launch of his feature film. “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” has won the Palme d’Or Award in the 2007 Cannes International Film Festival and stands high chances of becoming the most publicized Romanian feature film, having already been contracted for release on almost all continents. The film tells the harsh story of a young Romanian student who undergoes an abortion, at a time when abortions were banned by the communist regime of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and any woman undergoing an abortion ran the risk of ending up in prison.
The international media highly appreciated the film, which has also received the FIPRESCI Award, presented by the International Film Critics’ Federation. The American Film Academy has invited a record number of 95 countries to make submissions for the 80th Oscar Awards.
