The Romanian Government has set November 25th as the date for the first European Parliament election in the Romanian history. The decision has been made following consultations between Liberal Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu and representatives of the parliamentary parties. It was only the Democrats, former governing partners to the liberals, who boycotted the consultations, terming them as another postponement that could have been solved on May 13th, the first day established as the election day, which the Liberals eventually rejected. Prime-Minister Tariceanu:

” I believe that a good organisation of the election, and by that I mean not only the logistics, but also a proper background for a substantial political discussion on European issues, is an important test for Romania to pass. Europe’s eyes will be on us and that is why I intend to make sure that the government will take all the necessary measures for Romania to pass this exam.”

This week, the Romanian Foreign Ministry has announced it will start its own investigation into the alleged case of corruption denounced by the communist authorities in the Republic of Moldova, involving a Romanian diplomat on mission in capital Chisinew, accused of having taken bribe in exchange for granting Romanian visas to Moldovan citizens. Romanian President Traian Basescu has replied harshly:
” It was a trick, for the Romanian diplomat to be caught on camera holding an envelope, though it was not clear whether he was taking or handing it out. We know that it is actually travel agencies that commit frauds. This is the last planned aggression against Romania, and we will respond harshly this time.”
The Romanian President has explained that neither the Romanian Embassy, nor the Consulate in the Republic of Moldova grant entry visas, as these visas are issued in Bucharest.

Romanians are again facing the whims of weather. After days of heavy rain and storms, scorcher swept Romania again late last week, for the third time this summer. 25 counties in southern, western and eastern Romania and the capital, Bucharest, received the yellow code warning. Temperatures often exceeded 35-36 degrees Celcius, even reaching highs of 39 degrees. Hundreds of people needed emergency medical aid. The red code was for the first time used during the previous wave of extreme heat that hit Romania in late July. Back then hundreds of people died and another thousands needed medical care.

The French food producer Danone has withdrawn from the Romanian market several batches of fruit yoghurt, suspected of containing an ingredient contaminated with dioxin. The withdrawal was demanded by the Bucharest authorities who received, through the European rapid alert system, a notification about the dangerous substance. Samples have been sent to an EU lab in Budapest.

Cristian Mungiu’s film “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days’, the winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, is Romania’s proposal for the Oscar nominations. The film has won many domestic and international awards at various prestigious festivals. It tells the story of a student who had an abortion in communist Romania, when abortions were illegal and punished with time in prison.

The Romanian Black Sea resort of Mamaia is hosting the National Pop Music Festival. The festival has two days of contests, composition and singing respectively, a day of recitals and the winners’ gala on the fourth day. Romanian and Moldovan artists will give recitals outside the contest. The event is broadcast live by two channels of the National Television Company and by Radio Romania. Our radio station is media partner to the event, and in the past years has granted the most radiophone performer award.
