TOO HOT FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST(21.08.2007) |
(2007-08-22) |
Last updated: 2007-08-22 20:34 EET |
A very whimsical summer. That’s what the Romanians, and not only them, have experienced in the past few months. The heavy drought has wreaked havoc on crops seriously shaking the energy sector. Due to the lack of precipitations, hydro-power plants have dramatically cut on electricity production, while high temperatures, which lead to an increased power consumption have made the authorities switch to the thermo-power plants, which rely on a more expensive energy producing technology. The scorching weather was soon followed by several flood waves with heavy downpours and storms affecting households, roads and bridges.
Hailstorms added more damage to the already battered crops. Numerous localities were left without electricity, while weathermen had announced that August the 17th and 18th would be the hottest this summer. With the upcoming autumn the Romanians hoped deliverance was near. But, no! Scorching heat is again lashing out at the regions in southern, western and eastern Romania. Bucharest alongside 25 other prefect’s offices have received the yellow code alert which will stay in place from Wednesday until Friday.
Temperature is expected to exceed 35 degrees Celsius and in some areas temperature will rise above 38 degrees. The humidity-temperature index is expected to go over 80 units. Romanian Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu has again urged people to avoid sunbathing at noon announcing the reopening of a free hotline providing information on protection from extremely high temperatures. The Health Ministry has called on the ambulance services in the affected regions to extend their work hours and employ more personnel to cope with the situation.
Measures have been taken for the ambulance services to be provided with adequate medicines. An inter-ministerial committee for preventing and warding off the effects of the dog days has approved the reestablishment of first aid centres, starting August the 22nd. The death toll of the previous heat-wave in late July, when the red code warning was issued for the first time, rose to several scores, while a few thousand people requested medical attention after having collapsed in the street.
