(2007-08-20) |

The first and last feature film signed by Romanian director Cristian Nemescu, who passed away last year in a tragic car crash, at the age of 27, was the only Romanian production in the feature film section of the competition in the “Anonimul” Festival. The two awards received by “California Dreamin’” in Sfantu Gheorghe are now part of the impressive series of awards won by the late director’s film: The “Un certain regard” Award at Cannes, the Golden Falcon award at Ibiza, the jury’s award at Rabat, the Grand Prize, the audience’s award and the Canvas special award for best feature film at the European Film Festival in Brussels, and the jury’s screenplay special prize at Torun.
“California Dreamin’” reaped all these awards also thanks to a high level performance by the actors. Alongside Romanian actors such as Razvan Vasilescu and Maria Dinulescu, American actor Armand Assante plays one of the main characters. The famous actor said he was delighted to work with the entire crew and that he considered Cristian Nemescu a great talent. “He had an extraordinary skill of associating the life of one character to the problems of an entire society. This is, indeed, a special gift”, said Assante.
Armand Assante plays an American captain on his way to Kosovo, on a train loaded with military equipment. But in a small Romanian village, the head of the railway station, played by Razvan Vasilescu, stops the train with American soldiers, as it didn’t have the necessary documents to continue the journey. The film was inspired by a real story, seen by Cristian Nemescu on television.
Also in the feature film section, the best director award went to Russian Andrei Zviagintev for the film “The Banishment”, which also competed at the Cannes Film Festival and which proposed “an amazing cinematographic vision”.
The award for best fictional short reel went to “Before the Wind Blows”, directed by Samer Najari from Canada, while the special award went to short reel “The T-shirt” directed by Hossein Martin Fazeli from the Czech Republic.
The jury of the “Anominul” Film Festival also gave a special award to the Romanian short reel “The Boxing Lesson” directed by Alexandru Mavrodineanu, for the ambiguity and emotion of the lessons of life presented in the film, the force and fragility always present in the ring.
