The CDM Cultural Project Foundation in Romania will set Sibiu alive for two weeks, with a contemporary dance festival taking place between August 17th and the 31st. Under the heading ‘Sibiu Dance 2007’, the festival will bring together more than 50 dancers and choreographers from Romania and other 12 countries, including Austria, Belgium, France, the UK, and the US. The festival’s theme is ‘The Body’, with artists and shows bringing to stage various approaches to the human body. Sibiu residents, along with foreign and Romanian tourists, will also be able to watch screenings of dance documentaries and video choreographic works.

Two dance workshops hosted by foreign choreographers will also take place. Many performances will be held in unconventional areas, such as the Great Square, the ASTRA Museum and even shop windows. A performance by “Bang.Dance” will officially open the festival. Italian choreographer Emma Scialfa specially created the performance, which will be hosted by the Church of the Asylum, one of the first churches ever built in Sibiu. A particularly bizarre performance will be ‘Exception Transport’ by French choreographer Dominique Boivin, which brings to the stage a man and an excavator, locked in a dance sequence.

The show will be hosted by the ASTRA Museum in Dumbrava Sibiului and the Great Square in Sibiu. The festival will come to an end with the ‘Danse.Entre Deux’ project, a cooperation between choreographers Cosmin Manolescu, director of the ‘Sibiu Dance 2007’ festival and Bernand Baumgarten, director of the Danz Festival Letzebuergin in Luxembourg. Made up of two performances entitled ‘Broken Car’ and ‘Dreams’ Land’, the project was put together after Luxembourg and Sibiu were designated European Capitals of Culture in 2007.
