The city of Sighisoara hosts the 15th edition of the Sighisoara Medieval Festival under the headline “The Troubadour in Love”. The festival features medieval music, film, poetry, a competition of love declarations and folk music concerts.
Apart from Romanian artists, the Sighisoara Medieval Festival will also see foreign actors taking part in the event, from Italy, Spain, Croatia, Lithuania, Portugal and Spain, and musicians from Poland, Great Britain, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany Switzerland and France. The festival is meant to reconstruct the atmosphere of a medieval citadel, with street music and theatre and parades of craftsmen and townspeople, damsels and knights period costumes.

The Sighisoara Medieval festival was born thanks to the initiative of a handful of enthusiastic people who wanted to raise awareness about the state of degradation of this 15th century citadel. Sighisoara boasts the most beautiful and best preserved urban medieval compound, with narrow lanes, massive brick houses, still inhabited today, surrounded by walls buttressed with 14 defense towers, 9 of which are in good condition.
The towers bear the names of guilds, so we have the towers of the Rope Spinners’, Furriers’, Tinners’, Tailors’ and Tanners’. The highest of them is the 64 meter-high Clock Tower where the communal council once used to meet, but which today functions as city’s history museum. The tower features a device, still working, which sets in motion a number of wooden figures depending on the day of the week.
The festival in Sighisoara attracts 20 to 30,000 Romanian and foreign visitors each year. It is much more than the city can provide in terms of accommodation, so the local authorities do their best to convince private owners to receive guests in their homes.
