Romania has enough shale gas to meet its domestic demand for almost 100 years, a survey carried out by the US Energy Information Administration shows. According to the same sources these reserves would be somewhere around 1450 billion cubic meters whereas the country’s annual consumption would amount to 14 billion. In a ranking drawn up by the same agency, Romania comes third in the EU in terms of shale gas resources after Poland and France. However, shale gas exploitation has sparked off heated debates in Romania, raising fears that the methods employed could damage groundwater.
