CULTURAL EVENTS IN SIBIU (20.07.2007) |
(2007-07-20) |
Last updated: 2007-07-23 14:26 EET |
Sibiu city dwellers as well as Romanian and foreign Tourists will have to choose between 30 events in which 26 Romanian theatre companies take part, alongside theatre companies from the guest countries: France, Latvia, Denmark. Aside from indoor theatre shows, street theatre performances will be staged , as well as open-to-the-public workshops. Entrance is free of charge for all events in the festival. The aforementioned festival is not the only one in its kind. It was preceded by the International Theatre festival, the most important event of the year.
A Street Festival was held on Friday, actually the second stage of the Sibiu 2007 – A Crossroads of Cultures” Project, based on Transylvania’s multicultural tradition in general and of the Sibiu area in particular . Proof of the cultures’ melting pot in Transylvania stands Saxon settlers’ early and successful integration in the region between the 11th and 13th centuries.
The Saxons from Transilvania came from a territory shared today by the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Germany. That is why the project retraces the Saxons historical migration to Transylvania, bringing together 120 youngsters from those 5 countries, alongside 30 Romanian youngsters. The Street Festival will see those young people presenting elements from their culture (footage, costumes, songs, dances, games) in an interactive way, in an attempt to attract as many visitors or Sibiu city dwellers as possible.
Even more special is the relationship between Luxembourg and Sibiu. This year both cities are European Capitals of Culture , a relationship also based on the Saxons’ and Luxembourgers’ common historical ties. The two communities share the spoken language as well as a series of cultural traditions, highlighted by some of the cultural projects, underway in Sibiu and Luxembourg this year. (Luana Plesea)
