Bucharest wants a strategic partnership with Berlin, the Romanian PM Victor Ponta said Friday in an interview to Deutsche Welle. PM Ponta said that Romania, which is now enjoying political stability, is again an essential partner for Germany in the region. These statements precede the Romanian PM’s visit to Berlin scheduled for early next week. Bilateral relations and the Republic of Moldova’s rapprochement to the EU are two of the topics the Romanian PM will tackle with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.
At least 2 people have died in Romania in flooding and landslides caused by torrential rains in the last few days. Heavy damages were sustained by counties in the center, north east, east and south. Dozens of homesteads were flooded, and four county roads have been blocked, over 500 hectares of farmland have been destroyed, as well as 200 hectares of pastures. Rains are expected to continue, but not at the same level. The authorities are also monitoring the flow of the Danube, estimated to reach a maximum next week. Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are also affected. In Budapest, a heavy flood is expected on Monday, anticipated to be worse than the record flood in 2006.
One of the largest windmill parks in Europe was inaugurated Friday in Casimcea, Tulcea county, in the south east of Romania. The park belongs to the Austrian energy company, Verbund, the value of the investment, started 5 years ago, standing at almost 400 million euros. The windmill park has already been connected to the national energy grid. We recall that the south east of Romania, known as Dobrogea region, is the best location in Europe for producing wind power.
The 20th edition of the International Theater Festival started Friday in the Romanian city of Sibiu, former European Capital of Culture in 2007. Between Friday and June 16th, the city will be hosting over 350 events, theater plays, dance shows, circus shows, concerts, exhibitions, and conferences. Over 2,500 artists from 70 countries will be attending. The theme this year is Dialog, and the guest of honor is France. According to European Commissioner for Culture, Androula Vassiliou, the festival is one of the most important in Europe, ranking third behind those of Edinburgh and Avignon.
