Romanian foreign minister Titus Corlatean is on Thursday on a visit to Egypt and Morocco. He is scheduled to be received by the president of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi. He is also meeting his Egyptian counterpart, Kamel Amr, and also the Moroccan foreign minister, Saad Eddine El Othmani. His other major meeting will be with the secretary general of the Arab League, Nabil El Arabi. The discussions will center on bilateral relations and means of increasing cooperation in policy, economics, investments and culture. The parties will also be discussing cooperation in international bodies, as well as the regional situation.
Continuing protests in Turkey have so far left three dead and 2,000 injured, according to the Turkish press. On Wednesday in Ankara, the police used tear gas and fire hoses to attempt to disperse protesters, who are calling for the government to resign. The protests started on Friday, initially aimed at a building project in Istanbul, but soon turning into the largest scale manifestation against the government since PM Erdogan came into power in 2002. At this point, all major Turkish cities are embroiled in street protests against the authoritarian behavior of the government and its religious leanings. Erdoan, who is about to return to the country from a tour of Africa, said his government is committed to being secular.
On Friday, the Romanian city of Sibiu inaugurates the latest edition of its international theater festival. In 2007, the city acted as European Capital of Culture. Between Friday and June 16, the city will host over 350 events. Over 2,500 artists from 70 countries and 400 theater personalities will be present at the event. The theme this year is Dialog, with guest of honor France. According to the European commissioner for culture, Androulla Vassiliou, the Sibiu International Theater Festival is one of the most important in Europe, celebrating this year its 20th anniversary.
