Romania and Poland should play a powerful role in the European Union in the coming years, said Prime minister Victor Ponta on Wednesday during an official visit to Warsaw. At a press conference given together with Polish prime minister Donald Tusk, he also said that Poland is a strategic partner from which Romania has a lot to learn in terms of the absorption of European funds, industrial policy and administrative and territorial organisation. The Polish prime minister, who believes bilateral relations are exemplary, said both countries are interested in diversifying their energy resources. The two prime minister attended the signing of a protocol on the continuation of military cooperation between Romania and Poland as NATO member states.

The foreign ministry in Bucharest on Wednesday recommended Romanian citizens in Turkey to avoid travelling at night or in crowded places and becoming involved in any form of demonstration. Istanbul and Ankara were again the scene of anti-governmental protests in which 2 people were killed and thousands wounded. What started out as a rally against the reduction of green areas in a park in Istanbul has turned into a protest against the government led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On a visit to Bucharest, the speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turjey, Cemil Çiçek said on Wednesday that protests are the reflection of the freedom of expression, but that no rights can be obtained through violence.

A woman from Vaslui county, in eastern Romania was killed in a torrent on Wednesday following torrential rain in the area. In central Europe, record flooding, in which at least 11 people have already been killed, continued to threaten a number of cities in Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria, along the rivers Elbe and the Danube. Landslides have also been reported, thousands of homes were evacuated and immense material damage was caused. In Budapest, the Hungarian government has declared a state of emergency due to the high levels of the Danube. The situation is expected to become worse towards the end of the week. Hungary’s prime minister Victor Orban said more homes may be evacuated over the next few days in a number of areas in Budapest.
