The Romanian High Court of Cassation and Justice on Tuesday pronounced the final verdict, namely 3 years in prison, for the Romanian businessman George Becali, accused of bribe giving in the national football championship. George Becali is currently serving a 3-year sentence after being found guilty as accessory to abuse of office in a real estate deal with the state. The two sentences will mostly likely not be cumulated but the bribe-giving accusation could create problems to the football team Steaua Bucharest, Romania’s champion, whose financier is George Becali.

NATO defence ministers discussed Tuesday in Brussels the NATO mission in Afghanistan, ahead of the pullout of the Alliance troops from that country. For the first time, the participants devoted an entire session to cyber crime, where they analysed the current measures taken to protect the NATO information networks and the means for the Allies to strengthen their cooperation in this field. Romania is represented by defence minister Mircea Dusa.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry reiterated, Tuesday, its recommendation to the Romanian citizens who travel to Istanbul to avoid the central area of the city as protests continue in several big cities across Turkey. Romanian citizens are advised to observe the measures imposed by the Turkish authorities and avoid crowded places and involvement in any type of manifestations. According to the Turkish press more than 1700 people have been wounded and 2 have been killed in the past 2 days during the anti-government protests.
