Prince Charles of Great Britain, who is on a private visit to Romania, will meet President Traian Basescu and prime minister Victor Ponta on Monday. Over the last several days, the prince has visited a number of villages in Transylvania, in the centre. He bought another house in the village of Valea Zalanului, in Covasna County, in the centre, where he owns three other properties. Prince Charles has been a regular visitor to Romania, where he has become involved in the conservation of a number of villages in Transylvania, some of which are on the UNESCO world heritage list.


One of the priorities of the government in Bucharest is the restructuring of the National Tax Management Agency in order to improve the collection of state revenues and significantly reduce tax evasion. In an interview to Agerpres news agency, the first deputy minister and finance minister Daniel Chitoiu said Romania has one of the lowest tax collection rates in Europe, while tax evasion ranges between 5 and 9% of the GDP. Last month, the Agency adopted a draft project to reform tax management which will benefit from a 70 million euro loan from the World Bank.

Bucharest is playing host to the 36th Congress of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, with representatives of 44 different countries attending the event. This year’s theme is “Vine and Wine, between tradition and modernity.” The congress lasts until June 7th and is also attended by the European commissioner for agriculture, the former Romanian agriculture minister Dacian Ciolos. A member of the Vine and Wine Organisation since 1927, Romania ranks 6th in Europe in terms of vine-covered area and 7th in terms of grapes and wine production.

Romania won 2 gold medals and a silver on Sunday at the European Rowing Championships hosted by Seville. Cristina Grigoraş and Andreea Boghian won the gold in the women’s double skull event, winning the European title for the 5th year in a row. The other gold medal came from the women’s eight plus one crew made up of Roxana Cogianu, Ionela Zaharia, Cristina Grigoras, Irina Dorneanu, Adelina Cojocariu, Andreea Boghian, Camelia Lupascu, Nicoleta Albu and Daniela Druncea. In the men’s coxless four race, the crew made up up Marius-Vasile Cozmiuc, George Palamariu, Cristi-Ilie Pirghie and Florin Curuea won the silver medal.
