The New Government in Chisinau |
(2013-05-31) |
Last updated: 2013-05-31 18:07 EET |
Against all odds, a new government was formed in Chisinau on Thursday, thus ending the political crisis that started on March 5th, when the Executive headed by Vlad Filat was sacked under a no-confidence motion, as a result of the dismantling of the ruling coalition.
The majority made up of leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Party and of the group of reformist liberals facilitated Parliament’s vote of confidence. Reformist Iurie Leanca will head the new government, and the Democrat Igor Corman was elected speaker of Parliament.
Shortly after getting the vote, Iurie Leanca stated: “This vote of confidence is a huge responsibility. We assure you we will make all possible efforts so that communication between Government and Parliament should benefit the Republic of Moldova.”
Criticized by the communists in opposition, the new governing program is a pro-European one and was drafted to cover a one and a half year period. Signing the pro-European coalition’s agreement is a guarantee for the continuation of reforms started four years ago, when communists were ousted, said the President of the Liberal Democratic Party, Vlad Filat. Also, Filat has stated, this is clear evidence that the interest of the Republic of Moldova has eventually prevailed over petty party interests.
In turn, the leader of the Democratic Party, Marian Lupu, has stated that by setting up a governing coalition the foundation was laid for the acceleration of democratic reforms. Ion Hadarca, the leader of reformist liberals, has said that this agreement has safeguarded the Republic of Moldova’s European aspirations. The document has also been hailed by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Timofti, who addressed Parliament and called on MPs to vote in favour of the new cabinet.
Nicolae Timofti: “Voting in favour of the new government is the only option for the continuation of the process of European integration.”
According to the proposed program, the Leanca Government commits itself to bringing Moldova’s European integration process to a point of no return. The Romanian Foreign Ministry has hailed the vote of confidence that the Leanca Government received in Parliament. According to its communiqué, the formation of a new cabinet in Chisinau secures a deeper and special relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Also, Bucharest, has reasserted its full support for the Republic of Moldova’s European integration.
