Last updated: 2013-05-30 13:30 EET
A genuine cultural marathon and celebration of books, the 8th edition of the Bookfest International Book Fair will be held in Bucharest this week. It is one of the most overarching events of its kind in Romania, bringing together over 200 publishers and several thousand new titles ready to by released on the market. Apart from book launches the organizers have prepared reading and book-signing sessions, professional debates, creative writing workshops and public meetings with leading figures of the literary and artistic community.

Adding to the offer are film screenings, theatre plays for children and photography workshops. Whereas France was guest of honour last year, this year is devoted to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The three countries will be promoting the international joint project “Three Countries – One Language”, introducing the Romanian readership to no less than 24 German-speaking writers and publishers all across Europe.

The president of the Romanian Publishers’ Association and organizer of this year’s edition Grigore Arsene told us more: “The main attraction this year is German culture at its best, reflected in books depicting contemporary Germany, in recent history books, children’s books, non-fiction books or migrant literature. It is a huge opportunity to have three cultures reunited in one place at the same time and under one language. The cultural ties between Romania and Germany are far-reaching, and there is an entire tradition of German literature in Romania, as well as many works written by Romanian immigrants in Germany. The Romanians there still observe some long-standing traditions”.

Literature aficionados will be able to see the German Book Prize winner Katharina Hacker, 2011 Book of the Year nominee in Switzerland Catalin Dorian Florescu as well as two of the most important Austrian contemporary writers: Michael Stavaric and Joseph Winkler. Best-selling Romanian authors such as Neagu Djuvara, Lucian Boia and Gabriel Liiceanu will present their recent publications. Moreover, popular Romanian actors Radu Beligan, Valentin Uritescu, Horatiu Malaele and Tamara Buciuceanu-Botez will launch their own volumes.
