A report drawn up by the Constitutional Forum regarding public debate on the modification of the fundamental law, submitted to Parliament on Tuesday, contains some conflicting proposals, which reflect the state of mind of the Romanian society, said in Bucharest the president of the Constitutional Forum, Cristian Parvulescu. He also said that the report is the result of a consultation process that started in March and contains 400 proposals. According to Parvulescu, the most substantial chapter regards general principles, fundamental rights, freedoms and duties. One chapter focuses on balancing the relations between parliament, president and government, one gathers proposals regarding decentralization, regionalisation and institutional reform, and another one regards the organization of the legal system and the role of the Constitutional Court.
The Bookfest International Book Fair to be held in Bucharest from Wednesday until Sunday, is focusing on the German literature. This year’s guest of honour, the trio made up of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, take part in an international project called "Three countries, one language", developed by the Frankfurt Book Fair. Over 200 participants will represent the most important publishing houses and libraries in Romania. On Wednesday, the first day of the Bookfest International Fair, the Night of European Literature will be organised. Romanian actors and writers will read out, in unconventional sites, fragments from the works of contemporary authors like Jonathan Coe and Péter Esterházy, or classical writers like Franz Kafka and James Joyce.
The Romanian Chamber of Deputies discussed on Tuesday a simple motion regarding the situation of mining on the Jiu Valley, south-western Romania, filed last week by the opposition Liberal Democratic and PP-DD parties. The document calls for the resignation of the minister delegate for energy, Constantin Nita, and of the economy minister Varujan Vosganian, blamed for having postponed decisions regarding mine digging in the Jiu Valley. This situation, the opposition claims, places the future of the inhabitants of that area and the safety of national economy under a question mark. The simple motion will be voted in plenary session on Wednesday.
