THE ROLLING STONES IN BUCHAREST(18.07.2007) |

To paraphrase the Latin, “Veni, Vidi, Vici”, we can say “They came, We saw, They left!”. But the Rolling Stones- Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts left Bucharest only after they enthralled over 60 thousand people, who had long been waiting for the legendary band. Some people, especially those from the ‘60s and ‘70s generations, did not even dream about going to such a show in their country. If someone had told them, during the communist regime, that they would stand the chance of watching the Rolling Stones performing live, they wouldn’t have believed it and continued listening to their hits on the radio or on vinyl records.
But on Tuesday night, hits like “Start Me Up”, “Miss You” and “Satisfaction” were played live, for the first time, in Bucharest.
Fireworks made all spectators turn their eyes towards the stage, when Mick Jagger and company started the show. “Good evening, Bucharest. Hello Romania” said the band soloist, in Romanian, to the tens of thousands of people. In a burst of applause and cheers, Jagger carried on, also in Romanian: “I am happy to be here for the first time. Thank you for this warm welcome.”
64 years old Mick Jagger ran up and down the stage as if he was still in his 30s, enthralling the audience with his hypnotic energy and dazzling rhythm. “Let’s party, sing along with me” – the rocker urged Romanians, in their mother tongue. And they immediately took on his words and hummed the Stones’ hits. In a burst of well- deserved applause, the Rolling Stones made an entire stadium vibrate.
Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood worked magic with their guitars, while drummer Charlie Watts’ beat was equally dazzling …
The Rolling Stones’ stage was 30 metres high, as tall as a block of flats, and had a secondary mobile podium which moved through the crowd, towards the centre of the turf. The lighting system was also impressive, the stage turning from hot red, to navy blue and bright green. On the largest screen ever used by a band on tour, special Rolling Stones recordings were projected, presenting them as full of life and fascinating as today. The entire performance boasted the legendary Rolling Stones inflatable tongue, nine metres high and ten metres wide.
The Rolling Stones concert, one of the biggest musical events in Romania in recent years, seamed to have ended too soon, considering just how long Romanians had waited to welcome Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts here, at home. Even after a 40 year “reign” on the rock scene, the Rolling Stones put on an unforgettable performance in Bucharest. (Roxana Vasile)
