Romania believes a new NATO summit is necessary in 2014, said Romania’s president Traian Basescu after talks with NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen in Bucharest on Friday. Anders Fogh Rasmussen thanked Romania for its contribution to the allied operations in Afghanistan and said the Alliance still counts on this country’s support to provide training and counselling of Afghan troops after 2014. Rasmussen also hailed Romania’s decision to gradually increase its defence budget to reach 2% of the GDP by 2016, a commitment undertaken by Romania in its NATO accession treaty. Also on Friday Anders Fogh Rasmussen was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by the University of Bucharest.
Two persons of Arab origin have been expelled from Romania on suspicion of providing support, including of a financial nature, to terrorist groups in the Middle East, the Romanian Intelligence Service announced on Friday. The two persons had been watched since 2011. The Court of Appeal in Bucharest on Thursday approved a request filed by the Romanian Intelligence Service to expel the two and declare them undesirable persons in Romania for a period of 15 years. The two helped members of terrorist groups enter Romania on their way to countries in Western Europe.
The Grand Prize winners of RRI’s competition dedicated to Romania’s salt mines, John and Roberta Selesky of the United States have ended their stay in the country. They won a 10-day trip offered by our sponsors and partners to the salt mines in Prahova (south), Targu Ocna (east), Praid (centre) and Turda (north-east). Accompanied by our colleague Daniel Bilt, the two listeners also visited other natural, cultural and historical sites in these areas, including museums, memorial houses, monasteries and churches, as well as monuments, parks, Roman ruins, natural lakes and river gorges. We received 429 correct entries in the competition from our listeners and Internet users. Apart from the Grand Prize, RRI also granted 116 special prizes and distinctions.
Romanian student Tudor Cristian Jurgiu won the third prize in the Cinefondation category at the Cannes Film Festival for his short film In the Fish Tank, a prize he shares with the Slovak director Matus Vizar. The 2013 winner in this category is a student from Iran, Anahita Ghazvinizadeh for her short film Needle. Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, the winner of the Palme d’Or Award in 2007 with his production 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, was this year a member of the Cannes jury chaired by Steven Spielberg. Another Romanian director, Radu Jude, competes in the Cannes Festival this year with a short film entitled Shadow of a Cloud.
