The Romanian PM Victor Ponta on Wednesday participated in the European Council meeting hosted by Brussels where the EU heads of state and government talked about energy policy and fighting fraud and tax evasion. The Romanian PM talked about harmonizing Romania’s policy on renewable energies with the European one, about regional energy inter-connection and the protection of vulnerable consumers. He added that Romania would continue to invest in renewable energies, pointing out that Romania was able to identify new resources of energy and take measures to ensure its independence from Russian imports and also to become an energy exporter in the region. As regards fighting fraud and tax evasion the Romanian PM said Bucharest supported the European Council’s standpoint regarding the information exchanges agreements between member states and between EU members and other states. He added that Bucharest also supported the negotiation of accords with European countries that have a special legislation. The NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, will pay an official visit to Romania on Thursday and Friday at the invitation of the Romanian President, Traian Basescu, the presidential administration informed on Wednesday. Rasmussen will be received by the Romanian President and will also have talks with the Romanian PM Victor Ponta, the foreign minister Titus Corlatean and the defense minister, Mircea Dusa. On Friday the NATO Secretary General will receive the title “Doctor Honoris Causa” granted by the Bucharest University. The Romanian ambassador to NATO, Sorin Ducaru, was appointed assistant to the NATO secretary general on emerging security risks, the Romanian Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday. Ambassador Sorin Ducaru has been a diplomat for 20 years within the Romanian Foreign Ministry. He was Romania’s ambassador to the UN, to the US as well as permanent representative of Romania to NATO, in the last 17 months also holding the position of Dean of the North Atlantic Council.
