The eight day-long Romanian Comedy Festival, festCO, came to an end this weekend, producing a number of winners. The jury of this fifth edition had to select the best Romanian plays and also the best performances of plays written by Romanian authors, in countries like Serbia, Greece and France. The grand prize was awarded to the play “Red Comedy”, staged at the Bucharest National Theatre. The best director award went to Tompa Gabor, another Romanian, from Cluj, central Romania, while winner of the best set design award was Milivoje Stulovici from Serbia. French artist Eric Deniaud was presented with an award for originality, for his animated show with masks and puppets based on Matei Visniec’s play “Decomposed Theatre”. The well-known Romanian playwright, who lives in Paris, was the honorary guest at the Romanian Comedy Festival.
And this was not the only significant cultural event that took place in the Romanian capital city last weekend. The first edition of the “NexT” Film Festival for International Short and Medium Reels, gave the main prize to the Italian film “Il Supplente” (“The Substitute”), a manifesto against indifference. The best director award went to Deniz Gamza Erguven for the production “A Drop of Water”, a Franco-Turkish co-production, while the Canadian Kevin Hamilton won the award for best sound design. The “NexT” Festival was initiated in memory of two talented young Romanians, director Cristian Nemescu and sound engineer Andrei Toncu, who passed away last summer, robbing the film world of two exceptional individuals.
